Networks of Meaning
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (November, 1998)
Author: Christine Hardy Ph.D.
Average review score:

A new theory of consciousness, mind, and meaning.
While a few prominent linguists such as Alfred Korzybski and Benjamin Whorf have deeply influenced our understanding of meaning and language, surprisingly few psychologists have taken the study of meaning (semantics) as the foundation on which to build a working theory of the mind. Christine Hardy's book is a welcome corrective to this situation. In it she gives us a rich and broad semantic psychology that unfolds into a penetrating examination of consciousness itself. The result bridges the gap between traditional cognitive psychology with its schemas and semantic networks, and the modern process-oriented approach of the sciences of complexity. The book may well be the first step to an entirely new and deeply human understanding of the mind. (Allan Combs; author of The Radiance of Being)

The New Topping Book
Published in Paperback by Greenery Pr (July, 2003)
Authors: Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy
Average review score:

Great "Topping Manual"
This updated edition of the classic "The Topping Book" contains all of the great information of the original, plus some updated info about "SM on the Internet," the proliferation of SM groups across the country, and so forth.

I've always enjoyed the authors' writing style (very informal, friendly, and to the point) in other books they've written together and The New Topping Book is no exception. It provides lots of good information and thoughtful points. I've been into SM for over a decade, yet there were still items in this book I hadn't thought of or considered before reading it.

The authors speak of "ritual" in SM. Very good point and the longer I do this sort of thing, the more I agree with them on this point. In fact, they devote a whole chapter to "spiritual SM," describing ways to incorporate ritual into your scene. They also talk about "shadow play," ie ways to do scenes with major emotional risk, both ways to do them and how to end them safely, and what to do if something goes wrong.

In fact early on in the book, Janet and Dossie discuss what to do when something goes wrong, and how to handle this, whether it's during the scene, right after, or even a day or several days later. This also goes for after care, for even when a scene goes great, one or both participants may want or need this.

Among other topics mentioned? As in the original edition, chapters feature topics like "What Is It About Topping Anyway" (ie 'why the attraction to it'), Rights and Responsibilities of a Top, Learning to Play, Ethics, even where and how to meet others (always of importance).

The end of the book has a short "resource guide" of books, support groups, even a couple of online resources for the reader to learn more. It's nice to see an update for this classic. Excellent job you two!

New Tribalism (Tattootime)
Published in Paperback by Hardy Marks Pubns (October, 1988)
Author: Donald E. Hardy
Average review score:

tattootime rules!
do you think you are serious about tattooing? consider yourself a bit of an expert on it? and you don't have this book? (not even any of the other tattootime issues?) then you should re-think and re-consider! anyone serious about tattooing, its backgrounds, its history, its important figures should have this book. and all the other four issues. they all are out on hardy marks publications; the publishing company owned and run by the great don ed hardy. whom you should know.

this book was one of the main reasons why tribal tattoos became so popular again. (published back in 1982!) there are some articles in it by leo zulueta, one of the great masters, if not THE great master, of tribal tattooing. you'll find information about tattooing in samoa and borneo, pre-technology aspects of tattooing, tattooing names / letters, the swastika and its meaning in different cultures over the centuries, american tattooer paul rogers, and one of the greatest and most important american tattoo artists ever: sailor jerry collins.

plus, this is good for reference but bad for your bank account, there are a lot of suggestions for further reading! (i ended up spending over $ 100 on books recommended here.)

if you already do know in-depth about the subjects covered in this book, then maybe it is not for you. but still, imho, all the tattootime issues are a must-have in any serious collector's library. i keep checking them for all kinds of references. it's a shame hardy marks are not planning on doing any more issues.

The New York Giants Baseball Club: The Growth of a Team and a Sport, 1870 to 1900
Published in Library Binding by McFarland & Company (August, 1996)
Author: James D., Jr Hardy
Average review score:

Hardy yields another masterpiece
Hardy once again proves his strength in combining historical facts with Tolstoy-like prose. An absolutely terrific, scholarly approach to the beginnings of baseball in America and New York. This book will be of great interest to those baseball history buffs as well as to modern theologians. It was once said that America's greatest theologians are sports and comic writers. That quip certainly applies to Dr. Hardy. This book has much historical, literary, and religious value. Very highly recommended.

Excellent, Detailed, and Easy to understand...
I was already familiar with Data Warehousing before I bought this book. However, this book takes you step by step, in detail, through every step of the data warehousing process. The "tips" section throughout the text offer insightful clues for what to watch out for and help for a successful data warehouse project. I would recommed this book for the amatuer as well as the advanced reader.

Origins and Development of the Second Amendment: A Sourcebook
Published in Hardcover by Blacksmith Publishing Corporation (May, 1986)
Author: David T. Hardy
Average review score:

The Little Blue Book That Could
A few years ago I wanted to learn about the Constitution and the Second Amendment. I ordered box-fulls of books from various subjects. I read them all except the little blue book. It seemed so insignificant, certainly law journals were more substantial. After many, many months of study only the little blue book, covered with dust, remained. What the heck, it's only 85 pages or so. It couldn't hurt.

What I found was the most concise, and the most expansive treatment on the basis for the Second Amendment that I have ever read. From 500 AD Saxons to William and Mary to Blackstone to Henry to Tucker, to Story to Coxe to Cooley. Dred Scot to Cruikshank to Presser, to Miller and beyond.

The quotes are paragraph-length, meaty, and powerful. You will have little doubt as to the meaning of the Second Amendment.

An Oxford Companion to the Romantic Age: British Culture, 1776-1832
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (September, 1999)
Authors: Iain McCalman, Jon Mee, Clara Tuite, Gillian Russell, Kate Fullagar, and Patsy Hardy
Average review score:

A Real Feast of a Book
This Oxford Companion is one of the most engrossing of all reference works. The book is divided into two hefty sections. The first contains 41 substantial essays on general themes of the era, such as "Revolution," "Industrialization," and "Empire." The essays are written by leading scholars including Jerome McGann, and each essay is concluded with a brief bibliography, which is a great aid to research. Moreover, the essays are fully indexed. This in itself would be a great read, but it's only half the book. The second section of the Companion is a 375-page encyclopedia containing short articles on a whole range of significant contributors to European romanticism, as well as longer articles on the period's various genres, movements, events, and minor themes. What's more, the two sections of the book are fully cross-referenced, and the book is well illustrated throughout. This Companion should be on the "Recommended Reading" list for every undergraduate Romantic-era history or literature course. Not only that, it should be read, as well! A challenging, often provocative, always insightful survey of the great sweep of British culture in the Romantic age.
